Rohan Bopanna and Aisam Ul-Haq Qureshi may have lost their doubles finals match to celebrity athletes bob and Mike Bryan in the U.S. Open, but they opened the eyes of millions of fans around the world with their example on the tennis court, at least momentarily bringing the warring countries together to cheer them on. Celebrity athletes from warring nations team peacefully as doubles partners at U.S. Open
The true story of this day belonged to Bopanna and Qureshi. Thrown together as a pair to try to inspire peace between their homelands, their match was viewed in person by the Indian and Pakistani ambassadors to the U.S.
The diplomats watched the match sitting side by side. When the match had concluded, Qureshi was handed the microphone and given the opportunity to share his feelings with the American people. “There’s a bad perception that Pakistan is a terrorist nation,” Qureshi told the crowd in a sold-out Arthur Ashe Stadium. “We’re a friendly, loving, caring people. We want peace as much as you guys. May God bless us all.”

Meet Doug Mead: Sports Writer sharing celebrity athlete and charity benefit news
All too often, when we peruse various media outlets, we see stories involving athletes in a negative light. The use of performance enhancing drugs, alleged weapons and drug charges, DUI’s, domestic abuse…the list goes on and on, ad nauseum. In my particular column, I will seek out and write stories about the athletes who make a difference in people’s lives, in one way or another. Whether it be via charitable contributions, volunteer efforts, or other various forms of good deeds, these athletes will not only have a place on Green Celebrity Network, they will be proudly featured.
My other passion is as a director for an online charitable organization called Little Angels Charities. We support a variety of children’s charitable organizations such as Marine Toys for Tots, Cure Tay-Sachs and St. Judes Children’s Research Hospital. Little Angels Charities conducts several online fundraising events each year.
You can follow me online at Facebook and at Twitter as well, and I look forward to presenting you with stories than put a smile, rather than a frown, on your face. Continue reading
