A cold, blustery afternoon in Flushing Meadows was not enough to cool off the bats and arms of the New York Mets. With John Maine pitching into the seventh inning, and timely hits by Angel Pagan and Jeff Franceour, the Mets completed their sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers, 7-3, and ending their homestand at 9-1. With their recent hot play, the Mets are now sitting atop the AL East, a half-game ahead of the Philadelphia Phillies. It was their best homestand in over 21 years, and manager Jerry Manuel is pleased with what he sees. “I’m kind of anxious to see when we’re hot, the opposition is hot and kind of see where that falls and see how we manage to play in that type of setting,” Manuel said. Heading into a weekend series at NL defending champion Philadelphia, the Mets start a stretch of 18 of their next 30 games on the road, so Manuel will certainly get a chance to see what he’s looking for…
The Boston Red Sox, reeling from a dreadful start, righted the ship somewhat by sweeping the Toronto Blue Jays with a 2-0 win tonight, and getting back to the .500 mark for the first time since April 14. Back-to-back sterling performances by starters Clay Buchholz and Jon Lester not only gave the Sox bullpen a much needed rest, but bolstered the confidence of the pitching staff, who was second to last in the AL. Lester was dominant in his performance, striking out eleven and allowing only hit in seven innings for his first win of the season. Center fielder Darnell McDonald provided the spark for the Sox offense, scoring one run and driving in the other.
Other tidbits: You know things are looking pretty bleak in Toronto when they draw only 15,276 fans for the Red Sox, who typically draw larger than average crowds on the road. Even with the Maple Leafs out of the playoffs, Blue Jays fans aren’t finding reasons to frequent the Rogers Centre…
Cincinnati Reds’ rookie pitcher Mike Leake, a first round draft last season, won his second game of the season, going seven sharp innings in his win over the Houston Astros tonight, 6-4. Leake, who never pitched in the minors, allowed 5 hits and struck out five. This kid, combined with Cuban sensation Aroldis Chapman, will absolutely be anchors for the Reds’ rotation for years to come…
Is the end near for all-time saves leader Trevor Hoffman? In today’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates, Hoffman blew his fourth save opportunity in seven chances in the eventual 6-5 win for the Pirates over the Milwaukee Brewers. Hoffman, who only blew four save opportunities all of last year, is also sporting a 13.00 ERA, certainly causing concern amongst Brewers’ fans. “It’s easy to kind of say you’re snake bit, or whatever,” the 42-year-old Hoffman said. “Bottom line is I didn’t get it done again.”
